Draw Anyway
We are all born innately creative and express ourselves through movement, voice and drawing. At some point in our youth we feel judged (by ourselves and/or others) and we shut that creative expression off. We think it needs to look a certain way and the way we express it is wrong.
I created Avant Gard Character Drawing Classes because I wanted to reconnect with the playful side of me that had been smothered under this need for perfection. I wanted to interrupt my inner critic and lose myself in the sheer pleasure of being creative and really, I just wanted something fun to draw!

Working in the event industry over the years, our team would be creating the costumes, the wigs and make up for the performers only for them to be seen for maybe 20 minutes and then never to be seen again. So much blood, sweat and tears for a little moment of time!
It inspired me to create my own set of characters and put them in a life drawing setting, giving myself and others the chance to sit with them a while longer and enjoy the colourful world before us.

When doing a regular life drawing class, the brain recognises the human figure and knows that it has to look a certain way. But drawing these larger than life characters, the brain is unfamiliar with their silhouette and therefore the inner critic can relax and drop this need for perfection.
These classes were initially run untutored as a traditional life drawing class. But now I have decided to integrate the first part of the class as a series of warm up exercises to help shift the brain hemispheres and then go into a life drawing class format for the second half.
It is my intention for people to let go of their need for a perfect drawing and instead see their growth and development with what they have created within a few hours, to feel proud and to just have fun!
I hope that by doing an Avant Garde Character Life Drawing Class that you reconnect with that playful, creative side of yourself again that just does things because it’s fun!
